It means we have the highest standard of Health & Safety from all the contractors that engaged on their sites this year.

The award has a two-tier process:

– The Health & Safety Report scores carried out by the BDW H&S Managers throughout the year are reviewed.
– The BDW Project Managers are issued a Contractor Review Questionnaire which they must complete for each Contractor engaged.

The Senior Managers of the Business then name the winning Contractor.

This Wednesday we have our Enrolment day for our Medway pre-employment course. Interested parties are welcome to come along, find out more about the pre-employment programme in person, chat with our trainers and sign up for the course which is starting next Monday. The 2 week programme will take place at our training academy in Gravesend. Giving participants the opportunity to learn the skills needed to make it on site, gaining accredited qualifications and training, interviews and gain a CSCS card. Don’t be shy, come down and sign up.

Friday we are having a visit from Medway Councillors and representatives from MDC. They are coming down to the Gravesend Academy for a meet and greet. Check out our facilities, meet trainers and talk about future prospects. We look forward to sharing what we have to offer.

We continue to talk to schools, engaging with the next generations is something we are very passionate about. Creating clear, supported routes for young people to enter the construction industry, and we believe schools play a key role in making that happen. This week our pre-employment programme has kicked off at our site in Strood. After a successful enrolment day we have selected the 8 attendees who started Monday. Learning on a live site will give them a taste of what its like on a day to day basis on site. With our skilled trainers showing them the way they will learn the skills needed to make it in the construction industry. We wish them the best and look forward to graduation at the end of next week.

We are also taking down some members of the Medway Council to visit the cohort, allowing them to see in real time what the pre-employment courses are all about.

Working Together to Support Skills and Employment in Medway

O’Halloran & O’Brien recently welcomed representatives from Medway Council to our training facilities, providing an opportunity to showcase the work being delivered to support skills development, employment pathways, and site readiness across the region.

The visit followed the launch of our joint venture with Medway Council and MDC to deliver a series of two-week pre-employment programmes over the next 12 months, with one programme running each month. Through the programme, we will train 100 Medway residents, supporting participants to become job-ready and to progress into employment where opportunities are available.

Discussions on the day were open and constructive, focusing on practical delivery, real outcomes, and the role of industry in supporting local authority priorities around skills and employment. It was a positive opportunity to demonstrate how the OHOB Training Academy supports both immediate site needs and longer-term workforce development.

O’Halloran & O’Brien appreciates the engagement shown by Medway Council and MDC and looks forward to continuing this collaboration to deliver lasting skills and employment opportunities across Medway.

Ebbsfleet Academy Careers Fair 

We attended Ebbsfleet Academy’s Careers fair last Friday. Was great to interact with the pupils, interactive, polite and well behaved. It was a joy to have a chat with the students about their options and future prospects. OHOBTA are keen on showing young people their options, letting them know that construction is a viable career choice and open to all who wish to come into the sector.

This week the pre-employment programme in Strood continues. A successful week was had on the first week. Learning about working at height and edge protection, the operatives got a taste of what it takes in the world of  formwork. They also completed their NPORS accredited Traffic Marshal ticket which will come in handy when searching for jobs. Having tickets diversifies your portfolio and makes you a more useful tool for employers.

We also had some of the councillors from Medway Council over to show them what the pre-employment programme was all about first hand, meeting the operatives and trainers while also having a little go themselves.

This week the programme continues, learning about steel fixing, cv building, mock interviews and revising for their CITB Health & Safety test at the end of the week. Which, when successful this will allow them to get their CSCS card and get out there onto site as a construction sole trader. We wish them luck.

Confined Spaces & NRSWA Courses

At our Gravesend Academy this week we have a coupe courses running. Putting our trainers to work, doing what they do best and passing their knowledge on to others. Firstly we have the CABWI Confined Space – Medium Risk course, which is over 2 days and teaches the attendees how they should work safely in confined spaces. The second course we have running is the New Roads and Street Works Course (NRSWA) which is taken over the 5 days this week. This teaches the attendees all they need to know about working safely in public. It establishes standard for excavation, reinstatement and other activities related to street works.

Last week our first Medway pre-employment courses ended. All who attended passed and gained their green CSCS card. Also gaining industry knowledge and accredited qualifications such as manual handling, fire marshal and traffic marshal. Having these tickets under their belt will make them more attractive to employers. Jaiden, who starred throughout the course was offered a job with us in Sittingbourne and will start this week as a Groundworks Labourer. This is what the pre-employment courses are all about, teaching new comers to the industry, giving the tools and guidance needed to get out into the world of construction and start a career.

We also have a very busy week training wise, our trainers are all over London and the Southeast, doing that they do best and sharing their knowledge to operatives out on site. Confined space, Plant marshal, Dumper, Roller, 360 Excavator and Excavation Marshal are all on the agenda this week. We look forward to all participants coming out of the training qualified and ready to build.

Hurlingham Academy Careers Morning

We are visiting Hurlingham Academy in Fulham on Tuesday 10th, to talk to students about OHOB and the construction industry. We have a presentation prepped and ready to go. Any questions that students or teachers have we are ready to answer. Getting involved with the younger generations and talking to them about construction as a career is something we are very passionate about. We look forward to our visit.

North Kent Apprenticeship Event

Its national apprenticeship week in the UK and we are heading to Dartford and attending the North Kent Apprenticeship Event at the Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy. We are heading there to talk to students and the wider community about the route we have set up for new comers to the industry. We offer an alternative route to apprenticeships as it suits our industry better as well as the individuals themselves. We look forward to presenting our routes of employment to the residents of the Dartford area.

Enrolment Day : Pre-employment Strood Cohort 2

The start of our second Pre-employment course coming up next week. We have our Enrolment day for the second cohort with Medway council this Wednesday. We had a successful first course, we are keen for the second to get under way. We look forward to meeting people on Wednesday and selecting the best candidates to give the introduction into construction.

Anther strong week of training ahead. This week we are doing Fire marshal, SMSTS refresher, cable avoidance, excavation marshal, manual handling and rear tipping dumper.

Pre-employment Strood Cohort 2 begins

Our second pre-employment programme with Medway Council starts this week. With the attendees being successful through the enrolment day, they start this week on earning on what it takes to make it in construction. Our trainers will guide them to passing their Hleath and saftey level 1, gaining their CSCS card as well as other accredited tickets that will make them more attractive to future employers. We wish them all luck.

Kingston Council Green Skills Careers Fair

We have been invited to attend Kingston Councils Green Skills Careers Fair this Tuesday at Kingston’s Guild Hall. Along side London Square we will be down at a table ready to talk to the residents of Kingston, tell them about future employment prospects with OHOB, career routes in construction and our part in making construction green. We look forward to taking part and would like to thank Kingston Council & London Square for the invite.

This week of course we are again ploughing on with training our operatives to make sure they are u to date with the latest skills needed to safely make our structures. This week we have the following training lined up – Crane Rescue, Face Fit, Street works, Fire Marshal, Dumper, Pick & Carry Crane, Cable Avoidance, vehicle Marshal.

Hurlingham Academy Visit

Last Tuesday we visited Hurlingham academy in Fulham. We gave 3 presentations too 3 different classes. Explaining to the students about career paths in construction, the pros and the cons of the industry and most importantly that there is a career for any of them who wanted to give it a go. The students were engaging and very polite. The staff were professional and helpful. We thank them for their time and are more than happy to go back again.

North Kent Apprenticeship Event

Last Thursday we attended North Kent Apprenticeship Event at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy in Dartford. Was a great day, at first, the students from the school had the chance to come speak to us and other companies then later in the event the last 2 hours was open to the public. Well run and with lots of chances to talk to students, teachers, parents and other members of the public about our alternative route to Apprenticeships. We had a very positive outcome in the event. Medway Pre-employment Cohort 2 continues 

Week 2 of our second Pre-employment programme continues this week. Last week the operatives earned their NOCN Traffic Marshal qualification, touched on a bit of carpentry and started their introduction too Health and Safety in construction. This week they will continue to work towards their CSCS test at the end of the week, do cv and interview prep and continue to learn what it takes to carve a career in construction.

DH Decorating Visit Our Academy

On Wednesday we are being visited by DH Decorating. They are coming down to view the academy, see what we do, how we do, and most importantly how we can help develop their team. We look forward to meeting them and see what we can do for them.

Last week we attended Kingston Councils Green Careers Fair. It was a great day, we met local residents and took them through what we do as a company, our career paths and our pre-employment programmes.  We also met Kingston councillors and members of the DWP who were interested in our pre-employment dedication, all parties were keen to meet and discuss how we can help the locals of Kingston who may benefit from one of our programmes. Bollo Lane Academy Visit

Our Acton Training Academy in West London is getting a visit this week. We are happy to say that Directors from Barratts London, TFL and even the Mayor of London are coming down to visit the academy and see what its all about. We will be doing training and a tour of the grounds. We cant wait to meet all and proudly show off our Training Academy.

Twickenham Jobs Fair

On Wednesday we are attending a jobs fair at Twickenham Jobs Centre. We will be going down to talk to the residents of Richmond and Twickenham, show them the careers we have available for them, the different routes you can take in construction and our pre-employment initiatives.

Wharlingham School Careers Fair

On Thursday we are going to Wharlingham School and Sixth form to attend their careers fair. We will be attending to show young people what construction has to offer, show them that it is indeed a valuable career option. Roll on Thursday!

NOCN Group Foundation Event

Wednesday we have been invited up to Sheffield to attend the NOCN Group Foundation Event. We have been nominated for an award. Fingers crossed we win! We thank NOCN for inviting, nominating and hosting us. Come on OHOBTA!
